We are inviting applications for a Ph.D. position in urban ecosystem

ecology at Cornell University’s

Department of Horticulture. The Ph.D. student will be working in the

laboratory of Dr. Jenny Kao-

Kniffin < http://www.hort.cornell.edu/kao-kniffin/lab/>, investigating

plant-microbial controls on the

biogeochemistry of urban landscapes. The doctoral student will conduct

research on carbon cycling

linked to nitrogen mineralization across different vegetation covers

and management techniques in

residential, park, and institutional settings. Prior coursework and

research experience in soil ecology,

plant ecology, biogeochemistry, ecological modeling, or soil

microbiology is strongly recommended.

Just opened today three positions for MACC-II at ECMWF (see http://www.ecmwf.int/newsevents/employment/en/).  Two are rather technical (going into operations, which may still interest somebody with a junior science background), but one is on greenhouse gas assimilation. -- 

An NSF-funded graduate research assistantship is available starting in Fall
2012 in the Department of Geological Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill to work on
reconstructing mid to late Holocene or Pliocene paleoclimate. The Holocene
project uses isotope sclerochronology data from archaeological shells from
Viking and Bronze/Iron Age sites located on the northern and western isles
of Scotland. The Pliocene project uses fossil shells from the US Mid
Atlantic Coastal Plain.

The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend, full tuition
waiver, and health insurance. Additional funding opportunities, made
possible by the department’s Martin endowment, include summer stipend
support for all students, competitive Martin fellowships, and research and
travel grants. Applications to our PhD program are preferred.

REU opportunity on stormwater management and ecosystem function at UNC Charlotte

A National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) summer fellowship is open at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. We invite applications from qualified, highly motivated undergraduate students from U.S. colleges/universities to participate in a 12-week lab and field based summer research experience. The program runs from May 23 – August 12 but start and end dates are flexible. The student will participate in an NSF-funded project studying the effects of stormwater management on ecosystem function (e.g. nutrient dynamics, biological integrity, temperature attenuation and hydrology) in urban streams. The student will learn field and laboratory techniques, experimental design and data analysis to develop his/her own research project within this topic. The student will be required to write a report in the format of a scientific paper and give a presentation on their project at the end of the summer. The student will also be encouraged to submit an abstract of their work for presentation at a scientific meeting (e.g. American Geophysical Union). The REU provides a $450/week stipend for living expenses and travel costs to the scientific meeting will be covered.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate institution and a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Students from underrepresented groups and institutions with limited research opportunities are especially encouraged to apply. Join us for the Metta Earth Leadership Training igniting a generation
of emerging leaders to bring forth a thriving, just, and sustainable
world. The Metta Earth Leadership Training is a 4-week training for
college aged students that takes a holistic approach to combating the
rampant environmental and social justice issues facing society today
by providing young people with the knowledge, skills, and experiences
to be effective leaders back in their communities. Participants will
build their inner and outer leadership abilities through experiential
learning opportunities in topics such as: organic farming &
permaculture, ecovillage planning, wilderness quests, yoga meditation,
and social change organizing.  The training will be held at the Metta
Earth Institute- a learning community actively committed to balancing
the contemplative lifestyle with activism in Lincoln, Vermont.

Throughout this four week course, participants will:

       Acquire practical skills and knowledge through hands on
experiences in organic gardening, permaculture, ecovillage design,
animal husbandry, natural living, foraging, whole foods cooking and
preserving, and farmstead life-ways.

Develop transformative social change skills - storytelling, community
building and organizing, authentic communication, and personal
empowerment practices - to help grow and accelerate the ‘Movement of
movements’ emerging in our time.

Deepen into your life's purpose with daily yoga meditation.

      Reconnect, energize, and gain new perspectives in a five day
Wilderness Quest while learning to lead experiences in nature.
