The DEC Laboratory is seeking an individual to work as a Environmental Assistant to help handle the increased workload, which occurs from late spring to approximately Labor Day. The ideal candidate will be primarily responsible for a series of tests, which are used to monitor ground and surface waters.  The candidate will also assist the staff on a variety of other analyses and will occasionally assist the glassware processing area.  The work schedule is 7:45 am to 4:30 pm Monday - Friday. 

 

The candidate will learn the use of computer software in Laboratory Management will interact with chemists, biologists, engineers and geologists involved with environmental management, and will become familiar with the use of a quality management plan in day to day laboratory operations.  The incumbent works under a permanent staff member.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education        High School diploma and satisfactory completion of at least two semesters in an undergraduate program of environmentally-related studies with coursework relevant to specific job duties.

 

Experience      At least six months of work experience relevant to specific job duties.

 

Specific Skills/Specialized Knowledge     Good manual dexterity, attention to detail, computer skills, and knowledge of algebra.

 

Note:   Additional work experience relevant to specific job duties may be substituted for   undergraduate education requirements on a six month per semester basis.

 

Preference given to those candidates with:

 

One year of college including 8 credits in general chemistry.

Ability to tend to detail and carefully perform analytical procedures.

Ability to use computers to help perform assigned duties.

Qualifications:                        Must have well-developed communication skills and leadership ability; be able to work independently and as part of a team; experience working with children and adults preferred. Bachelor’s degree (or pursuing) in education, natural resources, or related field desired.  Driver’s license necessary.

 

Duties:                                    Internships are Full-time positions.  Provide quality educational experiences for all visitors to the National Wildlife Visitor Center and Patuxent Research Refuge through developing and conducting interpretive and educational programs for all ages, leading interpretive tram tours focusing on wildlife management and research, working with Scout groups, and assisting with all operations of a visitor center. Work schedule will include weekends (two days off during week), and some holidays.

Abstract, Poster & Working Group Submissions

 

During this Ecosystem Services Partnership conference, you will have the opportunity to present a paper in a parallel session, present a poster, or organize a working group. Details of all three options are below: 


Parallel Session Presentations:

These presentations will be held on the first two days of the conference. There will be only a few parallel sessions, but with shorter presentations. This will allow you to have a larger audience for your presentation.

 

Poster Presentations:

Posters will be displayed throughout the conference, with specific times for being at your poster for discussion.

 

Working Groups:

Small groups working over the course of two days (August 1-2), to solve a problem and implement the solutions. Working groups are intended to be transdisciplinary, including a diverse range of scientists, policy makers, communicators, and practitioners. They should allow sufficient time for participants to meet and interact to discuss and solve real problems in the field and also to determine how to best communicate the results. Working groups will be given a short amount of time on the final day (August 3) of the conference to report their results in plenary.
